SEW gearmotor in Times Square

SEW Eurodrive, drive solutions specialist, played a key role in the last New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, New York City.

A custom-made winch system used to lower the famous New Year’s Eve Ball was driven by a 30kW SEW Eurodrive geared motor.

The NYE Ball was lowered slowly, travelling just 21 metres over the final minute of the year—this speed of descent translates to about 6rpm in the gearmotor’s output shaft.

“Drive applications like this one call for innovative solutions,” said SEW Eurodrive. “Traditionally, this event is viewed by millions of people, so it’s crucial that only reliable, high-performance technologies are used. SEW is proud to be a part of such an iconic event.”
