Manufacturers’ confidence increases
U.S. and Canadian manufacturers’ sales fell in July, but their business confidence level increased slightly, according to the latest Market Outlook report from the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA). The monthly report measures sales and order trends among makers of power transmission and motion control products.
U.S. manufacturers’ sales fell 10.4 percent in July compared to June, but fell 38 percent compared to the same period last year. Their July orders rose slightly, however, inching up 1.4 percent compared to June.
Not much different the situation in Canada, where sales fell 11.6 percent compared to June and were down nearly 30 percent compared to July 2008.
PTDA measures sales of standard industrial motors, mounted and unmounted bearings, positioning systems/linear motion products, shaft couplings, clutches and brakes, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, variable speed drives and gear products.
Considering U.S. manufacturers, all the nine product categories listed posted losses. For Canadian companies, five product categories posted sales gains-including a 53.3 percent increase for clutches and brakes. Other growth categories included mounted bearings, shaft couplings, standard industrial motors, and mechanical drive systems and other power transmissions products.
